The State and Development Policy
This project revolves around historical examination of the relations between city and countryside in the history and politics of development in Latin America and East Asia. Among the sub-questions under study are the impact of early urbanization and industrialization on rural and urban middle class formation, and how this affects the likelihood of economic success among late developers. Future areas of study include the ways in which globalization disarticulates cities from rural regions, thereby increasing polarization across space, within classes, and in the nation at large.
